A raster image is made up of pixels, each a different color, to display an image. That .jpg image you found in a Google search? Raster. That selfie you just took with your smartphone? Raster. Photographs are a good example of raster images – rich color, lots of detail, smooth blending.

A vector image is made up of paths, each with a mathematical formula that tells the path how it is shaped and what color it is bordered with or filled by. Vectors tend to have pronounced color separation and clean edges – think of some of the most popular and iconic logos on the market.

In the print industry, the major difference between vector and raster is that raster is “resolution dependent” while vector files are not. Try resizing that selfie you just took to double its size – you are going to have a blurry mess. Raster files cannot be scaled up without loss of quality. On the other hand, vector files are scale-able. The same image can be designed once and resized indefinitely for any size application from can koozies to billboards.
